Sketches and such

June 23rd, 2009

Working on so many things at once I can’t even think with my brains. But here are a couple of images for now:

Some of you may remember this little creature. I will have more to say about her soon. All I can tell you right now is that I’ve been drawing her a lot over the last couple of weeks. This is from a sketchbook page.

A detail from a pencil sketch in prep for a painting.

And:

This will probably be a print. Or two. Watercolour and ink, 8×10ish.

New scanner!

June 17th, 2009

The new scanner works like a charm. No more crappy photos of the work.

Here’s the latest from the sketchbook:

Available Now

May 30th, 2009

Available now: Flinch, an excellent Anthology by the folks at Gestalt Publishing in Australia! Featuring works by Shaun Tan, Terry Dowling,  James Barclay, Justin Randall, and more…including myself!

My story, The Snare, is illustrated by Anton McKay, and I must say I’m very pleased with the result.

You can order it from Amazon or direct from the publisher.

Or buy it at better comic shops everywhere!

New sketches:

Poorly photographed while I figure out some new scanning arrangements. Ink on watercolor paper, 9×12.

Two convention commissions

May 21st, 2009

Two commissions done recently. Both watercolor on paper:

William S. Burroughs.

Sherlock Holmes and Watson, done at the Fan Appreciation event in Toronto this past April.

Working on several scripts at once, but I can’t really show much in the way of process on those. Or, rather, don’t really want to.

Calgary Sketches

April 29th, 2009

Spent a wonderful weekend at the Calgary Comic Expo, sketching & painting up a storm. The organizers kindly placed me between the inimitable Steve Niles and the legendary Sergio Aragones - both class acts, let me tell you. I had the honour of spending time with other contemporaries I both respect and admire, and met an edifying number of fans as well. All in all a great show.

Here are a couple of samples of the sketches I sold.

I was amazed at the enthusiasm of the crowd and the overall friendly atmosphere of the show - something that’s very hard to maintain once a convention grows past a certain size, but the people behind Calgary managed to make it look easy. Thanks, Kandrix and Laurie!

Not to mention the very genial bear, who was kind enough to pose for me (pictured) and to maul my enemies (not pictured).

I, Nominee!

April 2nd, 2009

Hey all! I’ve been nominated in the Best Writer category for the 2009 Joe Shuster Awards!

The considered work is THE APOCALIPSTIX! I’m in staggeringly good company up there - Darwyn Cooke, Mariko Tamaki, Cecil Castelluci, and more. I’d take membership in that club any day.
